Known to many as the Quiz Mistress of the National Science and Maths Quiz, Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufman is not only an inspiring role model but has continually shaped minds both in the classroom and beyond.
She has been instrumental in shaping the future of healthcare technology in the country as the founding Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Ghana. She was appointed as the first head of this department in 2006 and has played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for biomedical engineering in Ghana.
As a trailblazer in biomedical engineering, not only in Ghana but globally, Prof. Kaufmann’s accolades speak to her remarkable contributions. She received the prestigious International Women’s Forum Leadership Foundation Fellowship in 2011 and the University of Ghana’s Best Teacher Award for the Sciences in 2009. In 2018, she was honoured with the National Society of Black Engineers’ Golden Torch Award for International Academic Leadership.
Beyond academia, she serves on the boards of the African Gifted Foundation Ghana and the British International School-Ghana. Currently, she leads the Ghana Society of Biomedical Engineers, which reinforces her dedication to promoting biomedical innovations.
