Meet Ing. Patricia Asantewaa-Tannor; leading with Passion, Expertise, Leadership

The field of engineering is traditionally male-dominated. Despite this status quo, one woman stands out for her remarkable achievements and contributions- Ing. Patricia Asantewaa-Tannor of the Ho Technical University (HTU) in the Volta Region.

Despite its large population of male professional engineers, perhaps one of HTU’s numerous selling points is the only female professional engineer at the institution, with an outstanding body of work in civil engineering, water supply, and environmental sanitation, shaping the future of technical education and sustainable development in the region.

Ing. Asantewaa-Tannor is an expert in Civil Engineering, Sustainable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH). She does not only hold a master’s degree in these fields, but is also highly regarded for her contributions to water and sanitation projects. She currently lectures in the Civil Engineering Department, teaching critical subjects such as Water Supply, Hydrology, Fluid Mechanics, and Technical Report Writing.

Ing. Asantewaa-Tannor’s influence extends beyond the classroom into pivotal roles of guiding university policy as a member of several key committees, including the Guidance and Counselling Policy Committee, the Curriculum Committee for the BTech program, and the Disciplinary Committee. She also continues to serve as a Fellow of the Akola’s Hostel, providing mentorship and support to students.

She has leveraged her leadership and expertise to actively train trainers in sustainable sanitation practices in the Volta Region. These special talents have also been crucial in international collaborations, including her leadership for the Urine Diverting Dry Toilet (UDDT) project in partnership with Finland’s Jam University of Applied Sciences. Previously, she was responsible for redesigning and constructing UDDT facilities for institutions and households within the Ho municipality. This further cemented her role as a driving force in local development.

Ing. Asantewaa-Tannor is also an active member of several professional organizations. She is a member of the Ghana Institution of Engineers and serves as Treasurer for both the institution’s Volta and Oti regions’ branches and Women in Engineering (WiNE). In her role as Treasurer of Women in Technical Education at Ho Technical University, she continuously advocates for greater female representation in the technical fields.
