Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana in acknowledging the challenges faced by women in academia, explained that the path to advancement is not straightforward, particularly due to various distractions faced along the line. However, she firmly believes that women must cultivate a harmonious balance between their professional endeavors and their personal lives.
“You need to appreciate from scratch what it means to rise in academia and for women you know we do get a lot of distractions. Those years when you are rising those are also your productive years biologically, you are producing children you are marrying, there is the burden of domestic work still lies on the woman, most women are the primary care gives in their families”, she explained.
The first Female Vice Chancellor in an interview on the PL Show noted that women need a supportive home environment to strive for success admonishing men to support women in their space. “So please men out there support the women in your spaces. I have come this far because I had a supportive dad, I have a supportive husband, I have a supportive son, I have supportive brothers and so it is important that we support the women in our spaces.
Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, in her re-appointment as Vice Chancellor for a second term, emphasized that her role entails creating an enabling environment and nurturing talents to achieve excellence. She highlighted the importance of fostering a supportive atmosphere where individuals can thrive and reach their full potential, underscoring her commitment to empowering the university community.
She expressed a deep affection for collaborating with younger individuals. She believes that working with them presents a unique opportunity to shape and cultivate their potential, fostering growth and development within the university and beyond.
Professor Nana Aba underscored the importance of self-belief and proactive engagement with younger women while encouraging them to embrace self-confidence, seek opportunities and maximize their potential.

Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana. She is a Professor of Linguistics and an experienced university administrator, with over 22 years’ experience in the higher education sector.
She has built her experience in governance through attendance of formal management and leadership programs as well as on the job training. She brings a lot of innovation and resourcefulness to her leadership positions and is adept at change management. As Vice-Chancellor, she’s leading her university to uptake technology in all its operations, while keeping people as the focus.
